About the workshop

Got something to say? Say it with wood type! In this letterpress workshop, we’ll be diving into the extensive wood type collection at Starshaped Press to set simple text and ornament posters. We’ll discuss how to sketch ideas and plan, while working with a grid system and proper typesetting techniques. Participants will each set a short text or quote of their choosing and take home prints made on a Vandercook press. Ideas for impactful layouts, type choices and inking will all be covered. No experience is necessary.

There is limited space available in the workshop, so we are offering two dates to accomodate more guests; March 2nd and March 23rd. The curriculum, location, and time is the same for both workshop dates. You do NOT have to register for both dates to access all the workshop has to offer, and we encourage you to only sign up for one date so other guests may have a chance to learn as well.

About Jennifer Farrell, Starshaped Press

Since 1999, Jennifer Farrell has operated Starshaped Press in Chicago, with a focus on designing & printing everything from business cards to posters, as well as custom commissions, wholesale ephemera and limited edition prints & books. All work in the studio is created with metal and wood type, making Starshaped one of the few presses in the country producing commercial work while preserving antique type and related print materials. Jennifer’s work has been repeatedly recognized in books, magazines and design blogs, and has appeared in poster shows throughout the USA and Europe.
