BOOK ARTS IN CHICAGO: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE

Have you ever wondered what a community-focused literary and book arts center might look like, here and now? We invite you to join us in putting heads together to think, imagine, and dream up our collective future on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at the illustrious Colvin House (5940 N. Sheridan Road, 7:30-9:00pm).

Book Arts in Chicago: Past, Present, Future is the first in our series of in-person Curious Conversations. Panelists Jill Gage of the Newberry Library, Eric Von Haynes of Chicago Printers Guild, artist / writer / entrepreneur Julia Arredondo, and book artist / writer / illustrator Hannah Batsel will discuss what literary and book arts mean to Chicago, what a new center could catalyze, and how the past and present will inform what we do next.

Moderated by our Founder Audrey Niffenegger and hosted by our Executive Director Deborah Siegel-Acevedo, we're asking big questions with the goal of engaging with a vibrant mix of artists, writers, and curators as we re-enter the Chicago scene with a book-shaped bang.

Write What Scares You: Kicking Off Your Novel with Toya Wolfe

Join novelist Toya Wolfe at Evanston Public Library’s Main Branch on October 24th to kick off your novel!

In Write What Scares You, we’ll start that piece that’s been haunting your soul.

We all have stories or novels that we’d love to write, but for one reason or another, we’re spooked! Maybe it’s too personal, and we think our families will disown us if we share that tale. Maybe you can’t even imagine yourself writing anything, because you don’t think you’re a Writer just yet. It’s time to face your fears and get to work!

Writing in the Face of Fear with Megan Stielstra at EPL

Join writer Megan Stielstra at Evanston Public Library’s Main Branch on October 20th to write in the face of fear!

This writing workshop looks at the power in our personal stories.

We’ll start with the gut—what do you need to tell, the memories, fascinations, and questions that live not in your head but your bones—and move into craft—how to tell our own experiences in ways that are equally urgent to an audience.

Pulling from both literary and oral storytelling traditions, we'll engage in a series of (fun!) activities to get our stories out of our bodies and onto the page, honoring the deeply individual needs of the writers in the room. Is your story part of a larger work? Is it something you've been wanting to write, but man, this stuff is scary? Let’s make it happen. Let’s get at your stories. We need them. We’re trying to remake the world.

Meeting ID: 822 4967 6152

Passcode: rebirth

When Suzanne Clores heard that Audrey Niffeneger had plans to renovate the Harley Clarke Mansion into the Artists Book House, an audio project began to take shape in her mind: lakefront wind, echoing footsteps. After nearly 100 years of existence and three strange layers of stewardship, the Harley Clarke mansion evoked many emotions upon walkthrough for Clores: awe, wonder and most overwhelmingly, unease. This glorious estate, once electrified with vision, promise, and art, felt dead; filled with rubble but also raw possibility. A social and cultural miracle could bring it back to life. Clores thought. She hopes an Extraordinary Project podcast episode about the Harley Clarke House’s rebirth can be part of that miracle.

Suzanne Clores is a memoirist and podcast producer. Her book, Memoirs of a Spiritual Outsider (Conari, 2000) is a personal quest to experience alternative spiritual practices from around the world, and her 2021 Webby Award Honored podcast, The Extraordinary Project, is a docu-style podcast about our attraction to and questions about extraordinary phenomena. Her work has appeared in Salon, Elle, The Rumpus, and her essays have aired on Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ). She has recently been awarded an Illinois Arts Council Literary Prize and an Individual Artist Support grant for her essays and audio work. She has been a resident at the Vermont Studio Center, The Ragdale Foundation, and The Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. Her BA is from Columbia University in New York, and her MFA in fiction is from the University of Arizona. She lives in Evanston, Illinois with her family.

ABH+EM Present Live Puppetry with Samuel J. Lewis II

Join us Saturday, Feb. 26, 3:30p at the Canal Shores Fire Pit for a live puppetry piece called: Where I’m From, starring Sam and James.

Samuel J. Lewis, II, wrote the puppetry piece and will perform live.

Sam is an accidental puppeteer who tries to create intentional work. He has worked for over a decade with a vintage Black Americana marionette, which he reimagined as the character, “Jus Hambone,” which confronts and challenges racist imagery of Black people. Currently, he’s working with his two sons, using a newly built rod puppet. A puppet representing his paternal grandfather, creating a long-form puppetry piece based on recently discovered family history, tentatively titled, Everybody Knew Their Place.

To enjoy our ABH Quarantour from 2020 with Mr. Lewis, click here.

This performance is made possible by a creative collaboration between Artists Book House and Evanston Made. Free and open to all.

Parking available at the Canal Shores Pro Shop, 1030 Central St, Evanston, IL 60201.
