Mary Sweeney (as Horror Floral)

What lies beyond the Veil? Artist Mary Sweeney (as Horror Floral), in collaboration with photographer Tracy Whiteside, reveals ‘Ethereal Realm,’ a series of images that portrays the beauty of nature intertwined with death positivity.

Mary Sweeney

Horror Floral (est.2016) is the artistic alias of Mary Sweeney, whose sculptural assemblage-based work brings a dark arts sensibility to floral arrangement. Over time, a fuller vision has bloomed from that seed. Evolving beyond fantasy floral macabre, Horror Floral more descriptively examines the beautiful potentiality of confronting the reality of death. The work has been stated as calming and beautiful even when the focal point is typically described as a grotesque subject. Horror Floral uses art to express and educate people about the death positive movement. In modern western culture, we tend to shy away from not only the understanding of our own death but death in general. The death positive movement is a social and philosophical movement that encourages people to speak openly about death, dying, and corpses. It is a safe place to ask questions, speak your fears, and educate yourself. Horror Floral exemplifies the belief that finding the beauty in death and understanding that our time here is not forever; we are able to love, appreciate, and experience all the moments in our lives more fully.
