This workshop will introduce a sewn book structure. French link stitch binding can be used to create a durable book that can be used as a journal, sketchbook or recipe book. All levels are welcome to take this workshop, no previous experience is necessary.
Have you ever wondered what a community-focused literary and book arts center might look like, here and now? We invite you to join us in putting heads together to think, imagine, and dream up our collective future on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at the illustrious Colvin House (5940 N. Sheridan Road, 7:30-9:00pm).
Book Arts in Chicago: Past, Present, Future is the first in our series of in-person Curious Conversations. Panelists Jill Gage of the Newberry Library, Eric Von Haynes of Chicago Printers Guild, artist / writer / entrepreneur Julia Arredondo, and book artist / writer / illustrator Hannah Batsel will discuss what literary and book arts mean to Chicago, what a new center could catalyze, and how the past and present will inform what we do next.
Moderated by our Founder Audrey Niffenegger and hosted by our Executive Director Deborah Siegel-Acevedo, we're asking big questions with the goal of engaging with a vibrant mix of artists, writers, and curators as we re-enter the Chicago scene with a book-shaped bang.
In this hands-on workshop, we'll dive into the basics of bringing conceptual ideas to life in the form of an artist's book. We'll learn about artist's books, start with some simple formats, and then jump into creating mock-ups for big conceptual ideas.

Come on over to the Harley Clarke Mansion on Halloween for some trick or treating fun! We’ll be handing out treats from our cauldron outside the front door, and after you receive your treat, you can take some time to walk around the outside of the building to view the A House, Haunted windows.
Fun will be had!

We have a dumpster coming to Harley Clarke later this week, so we can FINALLY move out all of the garbage that we've been piling up (and we can clear out the basement!)!
If you're local to Chicagoland and have some time to spare this weekend (or Thursday/Friday), please consider coming over to Harley Clarke to help us move things out.
If you have power tools and/or a sledgehammer (and know how to use them), please bring them along and help us remove old shelving in the basement (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday slots). If you have friends willing to get their hands dirty, please bring them!
If you live far afield, and cannot make it to help (or you live local but want to help in a different way), please consider sponsoring lunch/dinner or coffee and breakfast treats for our volunteers! Everything starts small. A garden emerges from soil, water, and seeds. Every house was once a need for shelter. Every story grows from an idea.
We are constructing Artists Book House out of ideas and hopes, our love for books, paper, and gardens, and the talent, time and energy of our community.
We are having a party. Let’s hang out together and raise some money to grow our future book arts center from small and imaginary into a large, real place where we can learn, teach, and play.
Tickets are $40.00 plus taxes and fees. There will be light refreshments, prosecco, a silent auction, and souvenirs.
